OPP rescue two people trapped on the roof of submerged vehicle near the Sault

Two people were stranded this week when they drove a pickup truck off of Highway 17 and onto a flooded roadway, where they had to take refuge on the roof.

Two people were left stranded this week when they drove a pickup truck off of Highway 17 and onto a flooded roadway, where they had to take refuge on the vehicle’s roof.

Ontario Provincial Police in Sault Ste. Marie said the incident took place April 18 on Mile 38 Road, located off Highway 17 north.

“Individuals called 911 to report being trapped on the roof of their vehicle after driving into a washout,” OPP said on social media.

“The vehicle quickly became submerged, and water levels were rising. Sault OPP was assisted by Goulais Fire and Rescue, who utilized their rescue boat.”

In addition, Sault Search and Rescue also arrived with water rescue equipment.

“Thank you to our local first response partners,” police said.

“The North East region continues to experience localized flooding, road washouts and elevated water levels as a result of warmer temperatures and ongoing snowmelt.”

Residents are reminded to be cautious, since weather and road conditions change rapidly, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The OPP recommends people avoid non-essential travel in affected areas and to check road conditions and advisories on 511on.ca, municipal511.ca and OPP social media

“Never drive through flooded or closed roads,” police said.
