Youth who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Carry the Kettle homicides receives sentence

A youth who pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter in connection to the 2025 Carry the Kettle killings was sentenced on Friday. Jacob Carr reports.

A teen who pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter in connection with last year’s quadruple homicide on the Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation was handed down his sentence in Regina Provincial Court Friday.

The youth, who cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, received the maximum youth sentence of three years, with two years in custody and one under supervision. He will not be given credit for time served.

The now 16-year-old pleaded guilty to four counts of manslaughter on Feb. 25 in connection to the deaths of Tracey Hotomani, Sheldon Quewezance, Shauna Fay and Terry Jack at a home on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation early last year.

On Feb. 4, 2025, File Hills Nations Police discovered four people deceased at a home on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation.

The teen, who was 15-years-old at the time, was among the first of four people charged in connection with the killing. He was arrested on Feb. 18, 2025, along with an 18-year-old man.

Both the teen and the 18-year-old were charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

A third suspect, who was 17-years-old at the time of the killing, was arrested on Dec. 10, 2025, and was also charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

On Feb. 4, 2026, exactly one year after the homicides, a fourth person was arrested. The 67-year-old man was charged with one count of accessory after the fact to murder.

He was granted bail at King’s Bench in Regina on Thursday. He was released under several conditions, including no contact with any of the victim’s family members, no possession of weapons, as well as other conditions.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Andrew Breker commented on the proceedings on Friday.

“We heard about a tremendous impact on the loss of four individual people who each had different lives and different impacts on the people around them that love them. And it’s the statements that really brought home the profound nature of the loss,” he said.

Many victim impact statements were read aloud to the courtroom, including a handful from the family of Shauna Fay.

Her brother Jay provided a moving picture of how the loss of his sister has affected him, saying,

“I hurt so much. I can’t wait to sleep sometimes because maybe Shauna will come to visit again. Just maybe I could spend a little bit more time with her. Maybe play one more song with her.”

Fay also said that he hopes the now sentenced youth can change their ways in the future.

“You have a choice. There are good people around you that will add to your success and be by your side to coach you along the way. Let those people guide you. I hope you can break the cycle of dysfunction to become an example of change,” he said.

The second youth, who was 17-years-old at the time of the killing, also made an appearance in court on Friday. His case was adjourned to April 29.

Last month, the Crown indicated it will be seeking an adult sentence following any conviction for the 17-year-old’s crimes.
