The City of Winnipeg is encouraging residents to think sustainably with its upcoming curbside and compost giveaway weekends.

On Friday, the city announced its curbside spring giveaway weekend is set to take place on May 10 and 11, giving residents a chance to find new homes for their reusable, unwanted items.

For those who want to put things out, the city asks that you place household objects at the curb on your front street and label each item with a ‘free’ sticker or sign.

Any items that you don’t want to give away should be stored away, and all leftover objects must be removed from the curb by dusk on May 11.

Items that can be given away include, books, furniture, sport equipment, gardening tools and small appliances. However, the city asks that toilets with a flush volume of 13 litres or more and any items with bed bugs not be put out during giveaway weekend.

Residents are reminded to only take items marked as ‘free,’ to respect other people’s property and to check all items closely before putting them in your car or bringing them home.

Meanwhile, the city is giving away grass clippings, leaves and twigs that have been turned into compost from May 9 to 11.

While quantities last, Winnipeggers can go to 1901 Brady Rd., Kilcona Dog Park or the Summit Road closed landfill site between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to pick up free compost.

The event is only open to Winnipeg residents, who are asked to bring their own containers, shovels and gloves. There is a limit of 100 litres of compost per vehicle, and trailers are not allowed. Only one vehicle will be allowed per compost pile at a time.

The city also reminds residents that its yard waste collection program begins next week.
