Winnipeggers are being reminded to roll up their sleeves and get their vaccines ahead of the respiratory virus season. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) said the province is expected to begin seeing a rise in cases of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19. “Immunizations are really important to protect us and our loved ones from severe illness caused by respiratory viruses, and it helps keep our entire community healthy,” said Dr. Kayan Xu, medical officer of health for the WRHA. “By getting ourselves vaccinated means less chance of getting sick, and if we do get sick, less severe illness.” On Friday, 77 people booked appointments at the Access Fort Garry vaccination clinic. Kiru Griffin,18, was among them. “I think it’s important, you know, for the health for everyone around you, and even for yourself,” he said. “Stay safe out there. Better be safe than sorry.” Access Centres across Winnipeg are hosting similar immunization clinics available with appointments or walk-ins. Dr. Xu said it is recommended people get vaccinated early in the season as it takes about two weeks to develop a strong immune response. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are free for all Manitobans, recommended for everyone six months of age or older, those at higher risk of infection or severe disease, along with their caregivers and close contacts. Dr. Xu said a new addition to the immunization program is the RSV vaccine, which has limited eligibility. “Namely those who are 80 and older in Manitoba are eligible for one free lifetime dose, as well as those between ages 60 to 79 if they live in a personal care home,” she said. “Also, for infants, if they’re experiencing their first RSV season.” More details about the immunization program can be found online.
