Rusted ship removed from Selkirk slough

MS Lord Selkirk an eyesore no more The abandoned MS Lord Selkirk has finally been dismantled after rusting and rotting in the Red River for 25 years.

An eyesore in the City of Selkirk is gone for good.

The MS Lord Selkirk II sat in a slough along the Red River, rusting and rotting for 25 years after being abandoned by its owners.

This Septemener, Sasksteel started to dismantle the retired vessel and rid the area of debris.

On Dec. 15, Council met with Sasksteel at the Selkirk Civic Office to announce the ship's decommissioning was complete and thank the team for their work.

"As far as I'm concerned, it was money well spent. We got rid of a huge eyesore, a pollutant, and a danger to the community," said Larry Johannson, Mayor of Selkirk.

The province and City of Selkirk split the $400,000 removal cost.
