Manitoba schools closed; buses cancelled amid freezing weather

As bitterly cold temperatures blanket much of Manitoba on Monday, a number of schools are closed, and buses are cancelled around the province.

These cancellations come as Environment and Climate Change Canada warns of extreme cold across Manitoba.

According to the weather agency, southern Manitoba will see wind chill values between -44 and -50 as cold Arctic air remains over the region.

The following school closures and bus cancellations have been issued for Jan. 20, 2025:

• Brandon School Division – Buses will not be running outside of Brandon but will be operating within the city. All schools are open. Attendance at school is at parental discretion where travel is required.
• Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine – École Aurèle Lemoine is closed. Buses are cancelled for École Saint-Lazare, École Jours-de-Plaine, École La Source, École Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Gilbert-Rosset, École Saint-Jean-Baptiste, École Sainte-Agathe, École Noël-Ritchot, École Lagimodière, École Gabrielle-Roy, École Saint-Georges, École Pointe des Chênes, École Saint-Joachim, and École Réal-Bérard.
• Fort la Bosse School Division – Schools are closed, and buses are not running.
• Garden Valley School Division – Schools are closed and buses are cancelled.
• Hanover School Division – Schools are closed.
• Lakeshore School Division – Schools are closed.
• Lord Selkirk School Division – No buses are running. Schools remain open. Staff should report to their place of work.
• Prairie Rose School Division – Buses cancelled in all regions.
• Red River Valley School Division – All schools are closed. Staff should work from home.
• Rolling River School Division – Schools are closed.
• Seine River School Division – No in-person learning. Buses are cancelled. Staff should attend their workplace.
• Southwest Horizon School Division - Buses and classes are cancelled. Staff are assigned to work from home.
• Sunrise School Division - All schools are closed, and buses are not running.
• Turtle Mountain School Division - Schools are closed, and buses are cancelled.
