Classes are cancelled at a Winnipeg school after a fire broke out Wednesday morning.

The city said fire crews were called to Marion School on Des Meurons Street around 6:10 a.m. Smoke was seen coming from the building and firefighters were quickly able to bring it under control.

The city said damage was contained to one office.

No one was in the school when the fire happened and no one was injured.

Crews believe the fire started after an electrical outlet overheated as a space heater was plugged into it.

People are being reminded to turn off and unplug heaters when they are not around and to keep them away from anything that can burn.

It’s also recommended to buy a heater that has a thermostat and a safeguard to prevent overheating.

The city said damage estimates aren’t available at this time. Parents who have kids at the school are being told to watch their emails for more information.
