The primary caregiver of a two-year-old Manitoba girl is facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with her death.
The death was reported to Bloodvein RCMP on Jan. 24 after a female child under the age of three was brought to the community’s nursing station with serious injuries.
Officers arrived on scene and were told the child was pronounced dead.
The next day, the major crimes unit and forensic identification service executed a search warrant at the home where the child was living.
Autopsy results on Monday confirmed the victim died from injuries as a result of a homicide, police say.
Burma Skye, 56, from Bloodvein First Nation was charged with second degree murder in relation to the death.
She was remanded into custody.
Police say the accused was the girl’s primary caregiver.
“The homicide of a two-year-old girl is not just a loss for her family but a profound loss to the community” said Sgt. Laura LeDrew, lead investigator with the RCMP major crimes services.
“This is a senseless crime that will have a profound impact on the community, first responders and investigating officers. Our number one priority right now is seeking justice for the victim”.
The charge has not been tested in court.
