Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was in Windsor on Monday and stopped by CTV Windsor to discuss the 25 per cent tariff threat on Canadian aluminum and steel from the U.S.
In a sit down with anchor Stefanie Masotti, Singh said Canada must fight back.
“The first step is we need to immediately announce that there will be retaliatory tariffs on American aluminum and steel or other retaliatory measures that we can take,” he said.
“When it comes to aluminum, we know we’re one of the only suppliers. This move isn’t just going to hurt Canadians. It’s also going to hurt Americans. It’s going to increase the cost of things, when Donald Trump promised to lower the prices, this is going to increase the prices.”
Singh added that the workers and industries impacted by the tariffs have supports, noting the supports must be tied to the jobs and good wages.
When asked about electric vehicles (EV), Singh said the NDPs want to bring back the EV rebate, doubling it on Canadian-made EVs.
“We want Canada to be the best place in the world to build electric vehicles, and to do that for Canadians, who are right now, pretty angry that Donald Trump is attacking his good neighbour, his ally,” Singh said.
“Canadians are angry and are saying, ‘well, we aren’t going to buy American, we’re going to buy Canadian.’ To help Canadians make that choice, we want to make it easier, so a $10,000 rebate for made-in Canada electric vehicles, which there are many of them.”
In a final message to Windsorites, Singh ensured workers in the city that he is going to fight on their behalf.
“For all the uncertainty of Donald Trump, I’m going to fight for you and your families,” he said.
“I’m going to make sure we don’t let the prices of things go up, and we put in place real protections for workers.”
