Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers is warning the public about an increase in distraction thefts in the region.
OPP Const. Rick Surette said that while everybody knows what a pickpocket is, distraction thefts have another layer attached.
“Suspects approach individuals who are usually alone in busy areas such as parking lots, grocery stores, and they engage them in conversation and under false pretenses,” explained Surette. “And what they do is a means to distract the shopper. They’ll ask him questions about a specific grocery item or directions to get some buy somewhere. Once the shopper is distracted, an accomplice reaches in and steals their wallet.”

Crime Stoppers has some tips to prevent becoming a victim:
- Shoppers be aware of their surroundings
- Don’t place a purse on top of a shopping cart
- Keep your purse or wallet fastened and secured to your person
- Always protect your pin
- If there’s somebody invading your personal space or touching you, that’s a huge red flag

If anyone thinks it’s happening to them in the moment, call police immediately. If they have information about distraction thefts, they can contact Crime Stoppers to remain anonymous at Catchcrooks.com.
