Vets to use Service Canada locations after Veterans Affairs offices close: union

Published:

The lack of electronic collection and sharing of information is 'the greatest constraint' facing governments that need timely registration and notification of a death, the report said.

The union representing workers at soon to close Veterans Affairs offices say the federal government intends to send vets needing help to Service Canada outlets.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada says the planned closures will force veterans - like those in Windsor - to travel to other cities where offices remain open.

However, PSAC also claims the federal government will also use Service Canada locations to provide services.

A union spokesperson says those workers aren't trained to deal with complex issues like mental health matters faced by veterans.

In addition, PSAC says Service Canada workers cannot access veterans' files the way Veterans Affairs workers could in order to give advice or guidance.

Nine regional offices across Canada are set to be shuttered by the end of February 2014, but there's no specific date set for when the Windsor office will close.

Essex MP Jeff Watson didn't return a request for comment.
