Plans for fence to come down around former Duffy's property in Amherstburg

Duffy's plan moving forward Amherstburg council approves funding for expansion of Navy Yard Park. Travis Fortnum reports.

Amherstburg council is moving forward with the first phase of a major project to rework its waterfront.

Council has approved more than $3-million for the project, which includes transforming the site of the former Duffy’s Tavern.

“Nothing's worse than being downtown Amherstburg and once you get along down Dalhousie Street, you see the waterfront, you're in the King's Navy Yard Park but if you look over to your left, you see a fence and nothing that can be accessed,” said Coun. Linden Crain.

On Monday night, council approved the fuds to prepare tender packages for shoreline restoration, site servicing, grading and landscaping, to at least get the fence around the Duffy’s property down by spring.

Once the fence is down, Crain said ideas for the land fit right into the town’s strategic plan and he said he’s heard from residents who say an extended park is something they can get behind.

Crain told CTV News there’s still a lot up in the air right now in terms of environmental approvals and paperwork for other parts of the project.
