The City of Windsor said it is working to fix the cracks and potholes in Windsor roads.
It cited the fluctuating winter temperatures and the freeze-thaw cycle, worsening the damage to roads.
“We are experiencing a particularly harsh winter, and the freeze-thaw cycle is causing significant issues on our roads,” said Phong Nguy, executive director of operations.
“Potholes and cracks can form rapidly, creating difficulties for drivers. Our teams are working diligently to make temporary repairs and plan for more permanent fixes as soon as weather conditions allow.”
The weather impacts the roads due to water freezing in the small cracks of the road. When the water freezes, it expands, which puts added pressure on roads. When the ice melts, the pressure is released, but the surface is then weakened, leading to potholes and cracks forming.
When this cycle happens multiple times in a season, it can worsen the effects. Public Works is prioritizing high-traffic area and dangerous intersections.
Temporary patching is underway in Windsor.
If you see road damage, you are encouraged to report it to 311.
