A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle on a Nanaimo highway early Saturday morning, according to Mounties.

Police say the incident happened just before 5 a.m. at the intersection of Norwell Road and Highway 19A.

“Police spoke with the adult driver of the vehicle involved and an independent witness,” reads a statement from the Nanaimo RCMP. “It appears that the vehicle in question was proceeding northbound on Highway 19A and was passing through the intersection on a green light when the pedestrian was struck.”

The victim was a 42-year-old man, according to police, who add he was taken to hospital and pronounced deceased there.

Mounties say the driver is co-operating with the investigation and there were no signs of impairment, nor were road conditions a factor in the crash. The vehicle was towed from the scene for a mechanical inspection.

The intersection was closed to traffic for the investigation and the Nanaimo RCMP asks anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash camera video to call the detachment at 250-754-2345.
