Mounties say a 32-year-old pedestrian is in stable condition after he was struck by a truck and seriously injured on Vancouver Island.

A statement from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP says the pedestrian was trying to cross the Trans-Canada Highway near Beverly Street in Duncan when he was hit by the commercial truck in the northbound slow lane around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

“The injured man was taken to hospital with what were believed to be serious, potentially life-threatening injuries,” the RCMP detachment said. “He remains in hospital in stable condition.”

Investigators say the victim is a Duncan resident. The truck driver remained on scene and is co-operating with the investigation, the statement said.

“Evidence obtained by police suggests that criminality was not a factor in the crash,” Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said in the statement.

The police investigation is ongoing and anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
