Overpass strike partially blocks Highway 1 traffic in Burnaby

Published:

A truck is stopped at the side of Highway 1 near the Gilmore overpass on Feb. 5, 2025.

Authorities are investigating another overpass strike involving a commercial truck in B.C.’s Lower Mainland.

B.C. Highway Patrol said the vehicle was heading east through Burnaby when it collided with the Gilmore overpass along Highway 1 around noon, partially blocking eastbound traffic.

“Road users should expect minor delays in the area until all the evidence has been gathered and the roadway is safe for travel,” BCHP said, in a news release. “Please be alert and obey the direction of police and traffic control personnel at the scene.”

There was no visible damage to the overpass after the accident, authorities said.

B.C.’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement agency has been notified and will determine what enforcement actions to take against the driver or trucking company.

BCHP would not release the name of the company, as charges have not yet been laid, but said it is based in Richmond.

There were 29 bridge and overpass crashes reported across the province last year, according to the government’s online database.

One other incident has been reported to the database so far this year, at the Highway 1 tunnel in Glacier National Park, which was attributed to carrier error.

Flatbed Logistics Ltd. was issued violation tickets and a short suspension for the collision.

Last year, the B.C. government introduced stiffer penalties for drivers found responsible for damaging provincial infrastructure, including fines of up to $100,000, imprisonment for up to 18 months, or both.
