A man in a wheelchair was taken to hospital Sunday after he was struck by a freight train at a controlled crossing in Surrey, B.C.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the railway crossing near the intersection of Beecher and Bayview streets, in the city’s Crescent Beach neighbourhood, shortly after 10 p.m.
The Surrey Police Service says the man sustained only minor injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital for evaluation.
“Early indications are that it appears the man did not know the train was coming when he was struck, despite the barricades being down and the warning sirens/whistles going,” Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton wrote in a statement to CTV News.
The investigation into the collision has been transferred to the BNSF Railway’s own police agency, Houghton said.
