A down-and-out dog found wandering the streets of Victoria in August is making a steady recovery, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The B.C. SPCA said the tiny Shih Tzu, now nicknamed "Monkey," was suffering from various wounds and organ failure when it was found weeks ago.

But the dog has made progress following weeks of medical treatment, and is living with a caretaker.

In a news release, the SPCA said at one time the dog would cringe when a human moved to touch her but now is “happy to be handled” by people.

The SPCA said it will be recommending charges of animal cruelty against the previous owner of the dog.
