The Invictus Games are 10 days away, and while the focus is on the athletes, the opening ceremony is expected to be a spectacle.
Patrick Roberge, the executive producer of the Invictus Games ceremonies, said it’s the largest opening ceremony the games have seen.
“We have over 800 performers, some incredible celebrities and music acts are going to be with us,” he said. “We have a few surprises as well that we’re not talking about yet.”
Roberge said it was important to ensure the event be accessible for wounded or injured veterans competing in the games.
“A lot of these participants are suffering from PTSD and we take that incredibly seriously,” he said. “So no fireworks, nothing that’s going to make them uncomfortable. When they come out onto that floor, at BC Place, they will know one thing: They are welcome and we are excited they’re here.”

Some of the musical acts include Katy Perry, Noah Kahan, and Victoria-born singer, Nelly Furtado. Furtado will be performing with Montreal-based B-boy Luca Patuelli, and his break dance crew, ILL-Abilites.
Patuelli, who also goes by LazyLegz, said the group is made up of dancers from around the world.
“I never thought that dance, specifically breaking, could take it to this level,” he said.
The 40-year-old was born with a disability and was introduced to breaking in high school. Dance has given him the opportunity to perform on stages throughout the world, including at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He said he’s looking forward to the Invictus Games.
“I think that these games are that reminder that finding purpose, finding that passion or some kind of drive can help get you past that difficult moment within your life,” he said.
Roughly 550 athletes will compete in 11 sports including skiing, snowboarding, volleyball, swimming, basketball and curling, in the seventh Invictus Games, from Feb. 8 to 16.
