Prison officials say an inmate at British Columbia’s only maximum-security institution was hospitalized following an assault this week.

The prisoner was attacked by fellow inmates at Kent Institution in Agassiz on Feb. 9, the Correctional Service of Canada said in a statement.

The prisoner, who was not identified in the statement, was treated by prison staff before he was taken to a local hospital for further treatment.

“The assailants have been identified and appropriate actions have been taken,” the correctional service said, noting the injured inmate has since returned to the institution.

Prison officials and Mounties from the Agassiz RCMP detachment are investigating the assault.

No other inmates or prison staff were injured in the incident, the statement said.

“The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” the agency said.

The Correctional Service of Canada says it is reviewing the circumstances of the assault and will take appropriate measures to try to prevent such incidents in the future.

Kent Institution opened in 1979 and is the only maximum-security prison in the correctional service’s Pacific region, which includes B.C. and the Yukon.
