B.C. teen missing after falling through ice: RCMP

A search is underway Saturday evening for a teenager who fell through thin ice on B.C.’s Shuswap Lake, according to authorities.

The Salmon Arm RCMP says officers were alerted to the incident between Raven subdivision and Sandy Point around 2 p.m.

Search and rescue volunteers, firefighters and paramedics were sent to the scene, and as of around 5:30 p.m., the 18-year-old had not yet been found.

RCMP divers were also called in to help with the ongoing investigation, the detachment said.

“At this time we are asking the public to stay off local lakes as the conditions are currently unsafe despite the cold temperatures,” Staff Sgt. Simon Scott of the Salmon Arm RCMP said in a statement. “We urge increased precautions if anyone is interacting near icy bodies of water.”

Police said they would not provide further details for the time being.
