Homicide team called in after fatal fire at B.C. homeless encampment

One person was found dead after a fire at a homeless encampment in B.C.‘s Lower Mainland Thursday morning, according to authorities.

Mounties were called to the scene of the fatal fire, off of Highway 1 near 197 Street, just before 5 a.m., a statement from Langley RCMP said.

“We are in the very early stages of this investigation and actively working to determine the full circumstance that led to this fatality,” spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom said.

On Thursday afternoon, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed it had been called in.

“One person is confirmed deceased. The scene is secured. There is no additional risk to the public. More info when it becomes available,” a social media post said, linking to the earlier statement from Langley RCMP.

Anyone who was driving on Highway 1 between 192 and 200 streets from 4:30 to 5:30 a.m. and has dashcam footage is urged to call 604-532-3200.
