Two men wanted in connection with a prison break in Regina last month were picked up by police in Winnipeg early Wednesday.

Cody Dillon Keenatch, 19, and Preston Clarence Buffalocalf, 22, were arrested early Wednesday, police say.

Police were searching for the pair after they allegedly broke out of prison last month, along with four other men.

One member of the group was picked up shortly after the jailbreak on Aug. 24. Then James Joseph Pewean, 25, was captured by police on Aug. 29. Two escapees remain free.

The men, described by the RCMP as "dangerous" and possibly armed, allegedly broke through a brick wall at the Regina Correctional Centre and breached a security fence in order to escape.

The charges against them ranged from murder to aggravated assault. The remaining escapees still on the loose are:

  • Ryan John Agecoutay, 25
  • Daniel Richard Wolfe, 32

"We don't know whether the other two are in Winnipeg or not," Winnipeg police Const. Jacqueline Chaput said.

"There is no indication right now to suggest that they are here."

Wolfe, originally from The Pas, Man., is considered one of the founding members of the infamous and violent Indian Posse gang based in Winnipeg, said CTV's Winnipeg Bureau Chief Murray Oliver.

"He was in Regina awaiting trial on two counts of first degree murder and more counts of attempted murder. He is a pretty rough character considered to be dangerous and also probably armed," Oliver said.

The Indian Posse, Oliver said, is known to be heavily involved in prostitution and the drug and gun trade in Western Canada.

However, as one of the founders of the gang, Wolfe has virtual folk hero status among some groups, which may have helped him evade police thus far.

"They have somewhat of a Robin Hood image -- robbing from the rich and giving to the aboriginal poor. That's the image they want to project, but the truth is they're just violent thugs," Oliver said.

"But this image is probably giving them some street cred around Manitoba and there's probably some assistance they're being given to hide out."
