A man convicted of manslaughter will reside in Peel Region after being released, prompting police to issue a public safety advisory. Peel Regional Police said 74-year-old Gil Dasilva was released from custody earlier Friday following the completion of his sentence for manslaughter. Dasilva was arrested and charged with manslaughter in 2017 in connection with the homicide of Cheryl McVarish. Police said their Offender Management Unit “believes Gil Dasilva presents a significant risk to public safety and an elevated risk of re-offending or breaching his conditions, particularly involving women.” The 74-year-old, police said, has an extensive criminal history. They added that officers will monitor his activities and compliance with his court-ordered conditions. “Peel Regional Police are releasing this information as a precautionary measure to help reduce the risk to the community. Members of the public are reminded not to approach him.”
