An Ontario woman was in complete disbelief to learn the $5,000 she thought she won in a Lotto 6/49 jackpot actually had three more zeroes behind it.

Bowmanville resident Jacqueline Kroon said she was sipping on her morning coffee when she decided to check her lottery ticket on the OLG app to see if she had won.

“I thought I’d won $5,000 and was so excited. While doing my happy dance, I went to find my dad and showed him the winning message. I said, ‘I won $5,000!’ That’s when he told me to take another look at the prize amount,” Kroon recounted to the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto, as she collected her multi-million-dollar windfall.

Kroon said she had to send a screenshot to her sister to confirm the amount, adding she “couldn’t wrap my head around it.”

“Her message back to me simply said, ‘Get out of here!’” Kroon laughed. “It was an unbelievable and surreal moment.”

The retailer worker has been regularly trying her luck with Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max tickets for the last two decades.

“I’ve always said, ‘You can’t win if you don’t have a ticket, but I never thought I’d find myself here,” Kroon said.

“It’s amazing how one little paper can change your life. I’m filled with gratitude. This is a wish come true, and my heart is overflowing with joy.”

While her mind has been racing with what to do with her winnings, Kroon said she wants to make sure her $5 million prize lasts beyond her lifetime.

“First, I’d like to look for a new home where I can keep my family close,” she said.

“I also want to treat my kids and family to some special things and experiences. I love animals, too, and will find a way to give back to those who take care of animals in need.”

Kroon bought her winning ticket for the Dec. 18 Lotto 6/49 jackpot from Piggly Wiggly Convenience located on King Avenue East in Newcastle, Ont.
