A Toronto man raising money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation made a near-impossible ball hockey shot this past weekend to win $100,000—but few could have predicted what happened next. Wayne Robbins was at the charity’s annual Road Hockey event in Vaughan, Ont., on Oct. 3. He was given two chances to shoot the ball across 75 feet into the net at the other end of the rink. The catch: he had to sink the 66 mm ball into a 71.3 mm hole, leaving just 2.65 mm of clearance on either side, if the shot was perfectly centred. The first shot was captured on video, and the crowd surrounding the rink waited with bated breath as the ball left Robbins’ stick, popped up briefly in the middle of the rink, then casually went directly into the mouse-sized hole. “You’ve got to be kidding me!” exclaimed event host and former TSN announcer Rod Black as the shot went in. “I thought that was AI!” After being swarmed by fellow fundraisers, Black welcomed Robbins back to the rink to congratulate him. And then came another surprise: “I would like to donate the $100,000,” Robbins said as the crowd cheered the announcement. He said the money would be donated to Dr. Marcus Bernardini, the Division Head of Gynecologic Oncology at the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital. A spokesperson for the hospital told CTV News Toronto that Robbins was selected to take the shot after his name was drawn at random. Every participant in the draw received one ballot to enter the competition for every $150 they raised toward their fundraising goal. The $100,000 prize was paid for by an unnamed insurance company, the foundation told CTV News.
