SIU probing death of man at overpass on Hwy. 400 in Vaughan

The SIU has been called in to investigate the death of a man at an overpass on Highway 400 in Vaughan on August 15, 2016.

The province’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate the circumstances around the death of a man at an overpass on Highway 400 in Vaughan this morning.

SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro said York Regional Police responded to the area of Highway 400 near Major Mackenzie Drive early this morning after receiving a 9-1-1 call.

Genaro said sometime after officers arrived at around 4 a.m., a man was struck by a vehicle in the northbound lanes of the highway.

A 49-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gennaro said the SIU's investigation of the scene has been completed.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

The northbound lanes of Highway 400 were closed at Major Mackenzie Drive for several hours as investigators probed the scene but the highway has since reopened.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to call the lead investigator a 1-800-787-8529.
