Mudslide leaves part of Highway 403 closed for repairs

Published:

One lane of Highway 403 in Hamilton will remain closed for a week following a massive mudslide Friday morning.

The City of Hamilton and Ontario's Ministry of Transportation met Saturday to plan repairs, which will begin Monday.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the mudslide was caused by a broken water main between York Boulevard and Highway 403. In some places, a wall of mud of more than half a metre deep accumulated on the highway.

The build-up of mud, water and trees blocked traffic for about 10 hours.

Repairs will begin on the eroded embankment where the mudslide occurred, and fixes to the water main will follow.

The westbound 403 off ramp will also be closed during repairs, as well as the Hamilton-bound lanes of York Boulevard.
