Missing senior with dementia found safe

Published:

An elderly woman with dementia has been found in good health after going missing in Vaughan on Thursday night.

The 76-year-old disappeared in the area of Keele Street and McNaughton Road, near Major Mackenzie Drive, at around 6 p.m. on Thursday evening.

The woman, who suffers from severe dementia and speaks little English, wandered away without her caregiver noticing.

Police said they were concerned for her safety because of the freezing temperatures and her health condition.

Temperatures dipped to -3 C overnight, but with the wind chill, it felt more like -12 C. Environment Canada predicts that the temperature will continue to fall to -9 C Friday morning, and could be as low as -17 C by Friday night.

On Friday morning, police told CTV Toronto that she'd been found near the area where she went missing.

She had taken refuge in a car for the night.

Police said she still needed to be checked out by paramedics, but appeared to be in good health.
