CTV Barrie: Frost worries farmers Bright sunshine Monday, May 13, 2013 did little to allay the fears of many area farmers. Roger Klein has the story.

Green thumbs in the GTA had better cover up their plants or hold off on planting their gardens.

At a time of year when the temperature should be well above the freezing mark, frost is expected to develop Sunday and Monday nights, as the region grapples with unseasonably cold weather.

Environment Canada issued a frost warning for Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions Sunday due to a cold air mass over part of the province.

Sensitive plants will be threatened by freezing temperatures and patchy frost overnight Sunday.

On Monday night, widespread “plant-killing” frost is expected to form on the ground, Environment Canada said.

The frost warning was issued as people in southern Ontario saw a mixed bag of weather Sunday.

While people in the GTA dealt mostly with strong winds and periods of rain, snow and ice pellets were reported elsewhere.

Luckily, an end to the chilly weather is in sight.

The temperature is expected to return to normal as early as Wednesday. The long-term forecast from Environment Canada shows highs of 22 C and 23 C between Thursday and Saturday.

Normal temperatures for this time of year are highs of 19 C and lows of 8 C.
