TORONTO - A forest landscape by Tom Thomson with notations on the back went for nearly a million dollars at auction in Toronto on Tuesday.
"Winter Morning," featuring trees blanketed in snow, sold for $973,000 including an 18 per cent buyer's premium at Joyner Waddington's fall auction of Canadian art.
The back of the 21-by-27-centimetre painting features a title and signature - a rarity for Thomson.
The sale price makes it one of the top 10 highest prices ever achieved at auction for works by the painter.
Mountain, Consolation Lake by Group of Seven founding member Lawren Harris sold for $708,000.
The painting of Mt. Quadra in Banff National Park has been in the Harris family for years.
