Toronto Mayor John Tory has accepted a wager of ribs and barbecue sauce by Kansas City Mayor Sly James ahead of the American League Championship series between the Blue Jays and the Royals.
On Thursday, James said he would bet on a Royals victory in the series with an assortment of ribs and barbecue sauces from three Kansas City restaurants.
“I’m looking forward to hearing from you, mayor (Tory). We want to hear what you guys are going to put up,” James told reporters. "I wouldn't start getting your knives and forks out, however, because we plan to win this thing.”
In a tweet posted on Friday morning, Tory responded by saying, “I love BBQ & look forward to getting some from KC @MayorSlyJames.”
Tory also announced his end of the bet at Nathan Phillips Square later in the day.
Toronto, he said, would offer three kinds of Toronto-brewed beers as part of the bet.
“I thought about what would be appropriate for us to offer up and I would just say if they’re eating all this barbecue down there, you have to have something to wash it down,” Tory said. “I know, as well, they’ve been deprived of ever having the opportunity to drink any real beer down there.”
Tory also took the opportunity to boldly predict a Blue Jays victory in the ALCS.
“(The beer) comes with a warning,” he said. “Number one is that our beer is stronger. Number two, our pitchers are stronger. And number three, our hitters are stronger.”
“Mayor James, game on. Go Jays.”
The Blue Jays won three games in a row to recover from a two-game deficit and win a tense and controversial American League Division Series against the Texas Rangers.
Game 1 of the ALCS will be played on Friday night in Kansas City.
I love BBQ & look forward to getting some from KC @MayorSlyJames. Meet me at the #TORONTOsign at 12:15pm for Toronto's end of the bet.
