LISBON, Portugal -- The two young sons of a Benfica fan who was beaten by a police officer helped the team celebrate its recently won Portuguese league title on Saturday.
The two boys were on the pitch when Benfica lifted the trophy for its 34th league title in front of its supporters following a 4-1 win over Maritimo on the final day of the season.
Benfica president Luis Vieira handed the trophy to the children, who then passed it on to team captain Luisao.
Jose Magalhaes' sons, aged 9 and 13, witnessed his beating by a policeman last Sunday outside a stadium in Guimaraes.
Neither boy was hurt, but the younger one screamed "Dad! Dad!" as the officer struck his father with a truncheon.
Video of the incident has provoked a storm of outrage in Portugal.
