A Canadian soldier has died after falling from a roof at CFB Valcartier, the military said Tuesday.
Cpl. Jean-Michel Deziel was installing a telecommunications antenna when he fell Monday at around 10 a.m. Deziel was evacuated to Laval Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Deziel was a member of the Headquarters and Signals Squadron, and had served in the Canadian Forces since October 2006. He completed a tour in Afghanistan in 2009.
The squadron, considered an integral unit of the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, provides communication links between command and operational forces.
Col. Jean-Marc Lanthier, commander of the 5th Canadian Mechanized Brigade, offered his condolences to Deziel's family and colleagues.
"This young soldier who served a tour in Afghanistan had a resoundingly promising career ahead of him in the Canadian Forces," Lanthier said in a statement. "His unexpected and premature death represents a profound loss to our organization."
The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is investigating the incident. The Department of National Defence said it would not be releasing further information about the circumstances surrounding Deziel's death "at this time."
