A guide to help you choose the best Kindle model for you.
Calling all bookworms! I know physical books will always hold a special place in our hearts, but you’ve been seriously sleeping on e-readers. Electronic readers have a lot of pros over physical books — they take up less space, they’re easier to bring on vacation, and they allow you to read at night without relying on your overheads.
Amazon Kindles are some of the most popular e-readers on the market. If you’ve never used one and have been thinking of switching to electronic books, but you’re not quite sure where to start and what the difference is between all of the models, that’s where we come in. We’ve compared all of the Kindle models that are currently available, along with their price points so you can decide which one is perfect for you.
Here’s everything you need to know about the different Kindle models.
Kindle (This link opens in a new tab)
This is the original Kindle model and the most compact option available.
The original Amazon Kindle has 16GB of storage, allowing you to store thousands of books (yes, really). The high-resolution 6-inch display is glare-free and has a paper-like quality for easy reading in the sun, plus an adjustable front light and dark mode. A full charge will give you up to six weeks of battery life, so you can enjoy your book without worrying about it dying in the middle of a juicy chapter. It’s also sustainably designed, made with 30-75% recycled products.
Kindle Paperwhite (This link opens in a new tab)
This is the most popular Kindle model and is loved by #booktok reviewers on TikTok. It is Available in bundles with cases and as a Signature Edition with wireless charging.
Kindle Oasis (This link opens in a new tab)
This Kindle has a more souped-up design and comes with new and impressive features, making it worth the extra cost. It comes in two storage options: 8GB and 32GB.
Kindle Scribe (This link opens in a new tab)
The Kindle Scribe is the largest of the Kindle models and also the only Kindle that has a digital notebook and pen. It’s available in three different storage sizes starting with 16GB, and you have the choice between a basic pen or a premium one.
If you like to annotate your books and take notes, the Kindle Scribe is calling your name. It has an impressive 10” glare-free display making it almost double the size of the Paperwhite model. You’ll need all that room to write in the margins of your novels, mark up PDFs for work, and jot down your ideas for book club — doing so is a cinch with the Scribe’s notebook function and the included pen. Your notes can then be converted to text and sent right to your phone or computer. It is super thin, comfortable to hold, and has the longest battery life of all the Kindle models (months of reading and weeks of writing).
Sign up for an Amazon Prime account if Amazon Canada is your go-to site for shopping. It costs $99 a year (plus tax), but students can get it for only $49 (plus tax). If you’ve never tried it out, you can sign up for a 30-day trial period.
