Here's Everything You Need To Know About The Different Kindle Models
Amazon

A guide to help you choose the best Kindle model for you.

Calling all bookworms! I know physical books will always hold a special place in our hearts, but you’ve been seriously sleeping on e-readers. Electronic readers have a lot of pros over physical books — they take up less space, they’re easier to bring on vacation, and they allow you to read at night without relying on your overheads.

Amazon Kindles are some of the most popular e-readers on the market. If you’ve never used one and have been thinking of switching to electronic books, but you’re not quite sure where to start and what the difference is between all of the models, that’s where we come in. We’ve compared all of the Kindle models that are currently available, along with their price points so you can decide which one is perfect for you.

Here’s everything you need to know about the different Kindle models.

The original Amazon Kindle has 16GB of storage, allowing you to store thousands of books (yes, really). The high-resolution 6-inch display is glare-free and has a paper-like quality for easy reading in the sun, plus an adjustable front light and dark mode. A full charge will give you up to six weeks of battery life, so you can enjoy your book without worrying about it dying in the middle of a juicy chapter. It’s also sustainably designed, made with 30-75% recycled products.

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite features a slightly larger, glare-fee 6.8-inch display. Lighting got a bit of a boost with this model, as you can switch to warm light and shift screen shade from white to amber (it’s easier on the eyes when reading at night). Page turns are also 20% smoother, and everything can be customized down to how the pages refresh when you turn them, font size, and margin width. Something that makes this model stand out is that it’s waterproof, meaning you won’t have to worry about rogue splashes frying it when you’re reading by the pool or in the bath. A single charge on the Paperwhite’s battery can last up to 10 weeks and it features the same 16GB of storage as the original Kindle.

The Kindle Oasis is a bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for. For starters, the waterproof, glare-free display is 7 inches and it’s the first model to feature a flush design between the screen and frame. It also has page-turning buttons on the side, so you won’t have to tap the screen like you would on the Original Kindle and Paperwhite. The cherry on top? This is the first model to have an option with cellular connectivity, so you can access millions of books and newspapers to read on the go.

If you like to annotate your books and take notes, the Kindle Scribe is calling your name. It has an impressive 10” glare-free display making it almost double the size of the Paperwhite model. You’ll need all that room to write in the margins of your novels, mark up PDFs for work, and jot down your ideas for book club — doing so is a cinch with the Scribe’s notebook function and the included pen. Your notes can then be converted to text and sent right to your phone or computer. It is super thin, comfortable to hold, and has the longest battery life of all the Kindle models (months of reading and weeks of writing).

Sign up for an Amazon Prime account if Amazon Canada is your go-to site for shopping. It costs $99 a year (plus tax), but students can get it for only $49 (plus tax). If you’ve never tried it out, you can sign up for a 30-day trial period.
