Make winter cleanup easier with our guide to the best electric snow shovels in Canada. We've reviewed top models for clearing power, ease of use, and reliability in Canadian winters.

Canadian winters can be brutal, and shovelling isn’t very fun for anyone. Snow blowers are great, but they’re bulky and can be difficult to maneuver in certain conditions and won’t be much help for stairs and things. If only there was a middle-of-the-line solution… oh wait, there is!

Electric snow shovels are shaped like traditional shovels but have a mini snow blower on the bottom — you get all the convenience and maneuverability of a shovel with the snow-clearing power of a snow blower. Talk about a win! They’re incredibly effective on all types of snow, incredibly easy to use, and they come in a variety of sizes and even two different power types, corded or cordless.

If an electric snow shovel sounds like the companion you want for your winters, but you’re not quite sure where to start, we’re here to help. Electric snow shovels will vary in a variety of features including price, clearing path, throw distance, clearing speed, overall size and weight, power type, and more. And every feature matters.

This comprehensive guide will investigate the best electric snow shovels in Canada right now and outline the criteria you should consider while making your purchase decision. Let’s dive right into our top five products.

Our Top Cordless Pick for The Best Electric Snow Shovel

Snow Joe 24V-SS13 24-Volt 13-Inch Cordless Snow Shovel Review

What We Think of the Snow Joe 24V-SS13 24-Volt 13-Inch Cordless Snow Shovel

We really like the Snow Joe 24V-SS13 24-Volt 13-Inch Cordless Snow Shovel. As a cordless option, you’ll have a lot more freedom to move and get to skip the hassle of cord management in the snow. Since it has a two-handle design, it’s very comfortable to use even on stairs. It’s also one of the quitter electric snow shovels, too, so noise pollution won’t be a concern with this one. Thank goodness.

One of our favourite features is the bottom scraper. It allows you to clear right to the ground without worrying about damaging the auger blades. You’ll significantly lower your risk of ice forming thanks to this feature. We’re also quite happy with the 13” clearing width — you won’t have to walk back and forth forever to get the job done.

There are a couple of minor shortcomings we want to point out before we wrap this up. First, with a battery life of only 22 minutes, this shovel isn’t the ideal choice if you’ll be clearing a lot of snow with it. It’s a better fit for the smaller spaces like stairs, decks/patios, and sidewalks. Also, the housing can get damaged pretty easily if you bump into things, so you’ll have to be a little extra careful with it.

Overall, the Snow Joe 24V-SS13 24-Volt 13-Inch Cordless Snow Shovel is one of our favourite options this year. It isn’t quite perfect, but it comes pretty close, and it’ll be an easy-to-use option no matter where you’re clearing snow.

Reviewers have a high opinion of the Snow Joe 24V-SS13 24-Volt 13-Inch Cordless Snow Shovel. They appreciate that the bottom scraper lets them clear straight down to the ground, and the 13” clearing width means they can clear spaces without a ton of back and forth. The battery charges quickly and they’re happy with how well it moves the snow. The housing isn’t super durable, though, and the battery drains quickly.

Our Top Corded Pick

Greenworks 2600802 12-Inch Corded Snow Shovel Review

What We Think of the Greenworks 2600802 12-Inch Corded Snow Shovel

The Greenworks 2600802 12-Inch Corded Snow Shovel is a very well-rounded option. One of the things we like best about it is how maneuverable it is. The 12-inch clearing width means it fits on stairs and tighter decks/patios. We’re also really happy with the push-button start — it’s reliable and incredibly easy to use.

If storage space is something you’re concerned about, this is still a great option. It can fold in half to fit under tables or on a shelf, and it’ll also go in the car a lot easier if you need to help out relatives or friends with their snow. Since the secondary handle is adjustable, this option is also great for use by multiple people. Everyone gets to be comfortable!

Luckily for you, we don’t have any issues to discuss related to performance. The only real concern we have is one that is common to all corded pieces of equipment — the extension cord. You’ll have to do a lot of cord management while you clear snow, and since this thing can’t stand on its own like a snow blower or lawn mower, it’ll be a little tricky. But that’s the only thing to worry about here!

All in all, the Greenworks 2600802 12-Inch Corded Snow Shovel is a great option if you’re not interested in concerning yourself with a battery life and limited run time. The cord can still be annoying, but if you’re willing to look past that, you won’t find a better all-around corded snow shovel.

Our Upgrade Pick

Ego Power+ MSS1203 Multi-Head Snow Shovel Kit Review

What We Think of the Ego Power+ MSS1203 Multi-Head Snow Shovel Kit

The Ego Power+ MSS1203 Multi-Head Snow Shovel Kit has a lot to offer. It’s one of the most powerful cordless options out there, so it’ll be able to tackle the deep snowfalls and drastically lighten your workload. Plus, with a battery that’ll last 45-60 minutes, you won’t have to take a break to recharge even if you live on a pretty large property with lots of space to clear.

The 2-speed switch paired with a variable speed trigger gives you lots of control over how much power you’re using, too. You can even change the throw direction a bit to help combat an unhelpful wind! And if you already have tools from this brand, you’ll be able to use this power head with those ones too! We love the convenience of a crossover.

There are only a few minor reasons this option won’t be your perfect fit. It has a tendency to get stuck on uneven surfaces like deck slats, so you’ll need to move slowly on those surfaces for your safety. It’s also a bit heavy, so if you’re relying on a lightweight option, this isn’t a good choice. The expensive price is the only other reason you might choose to look elsewhere.

Overall, the Ego Power+ MSS1203 Multi-Head Snow Shovel Kit is an expensive but worthwhile investment in everyone’s snow-clearing arsenal. It’s powerful, versatile, and has one of the best runtimes per charge you’ll see. What a combination!

  • Performance: 5/5

  • Usability: 4.5/5

  • Price: 3/5

It plows through snow very well, even when it’s 6+ inches deep, and it’s still maneuverable enough to use on stairs, decks, etc. This power is a trade-off for the heavier weight, though. They’re very happy with the throw distance and variable speeds.

Our Budget Pick

Snow Joe 320E 10-Inch Electric Snow Shovel Review

What We Think of the Snow Joe 320E 10-Inch Electric Snow Shovel

We’re pretty happy with the Snow Joe 320E 10-Inch Electric Snow Shovel for the price. And we’re very, very happy with the price. If you’re shopping on a budget, you won’t find anything better than this. This shovel is also the best option if you’ll be working in small spaces like thin walkways or small decks/patios — the 10-inch clearing width and lightweight design make it highly maneuverable.

One of the other things we like best is the scraper blade attached to the bottom. It makes sure the shovel can clear right down to the ground without risking any damage to the auger blade or housing. Nice, huh? You’ll also really appreciate the adjustable handle — you can pivot its position to make sure you have the most comfortable grip angle possible.

Unfortunately, we do have a couple of issues to bring up with this one. The main problem is with its durability — the auger blade is made of low-quality plastic that gets damaged easily if it hits any debris or is working in dense snow. Not ideal. The small 10” clearing width also means you’ll have to make a lot of passes in a larger space to clear the snow, so it’s not the most efficient thing either.

Overall, the Snow Joe 320E 10-Inch Electric Snow Shovel is the ideal choice if you won’t be clearing in any hazardous spaces and budget-friendliness is your priority. It isn’t even close to the most durable thing out there, but if you’re careful, you’ll really be able to simplify your snow-clearing tasks.

  • Performance: 4.5/5

  • Usability: 5/5

  • Price: 5/5

What We Think of the Earthwise SN70016 16-Inch Corded Snow Shovel

The Earthwise SN70016 16-Inch Corded Snow Shovel has so much going for it. One of the most unique features it boasts is the addition of the rear wheels. Not only do they help balance the machine if you want to take a break, but they also make it easier to push through snow. We’re all for less manual effort being required! Since it also has an adjustable secondary handle, comfort is a guarantee while shovelling with this one.

You’ll also be insanely happy with the power behind this machine. With a 16-inch clearing width, 8-inch clearing height, and superb 430 lbs/min clearing speed, this snow shovel will blast through every type of snowfall in no time at all. Talk about efficiency! Since it runs on a power cord instead of a battery, you’ll be able to work as long as you need to without a break to recharge.

There are only two very small things that you might not love about this one. Since this is a corded model, you will have the hassle of managing an extension cord while you’re clearing snow. But since it can stand on its own while you do that, it’s not as difficult as you’d expect. Also, the larger size of this one might be an issue if you’re low on storage space in your shed or garage.

Overall, the Earthwise SN70016 16-Inch Corded Snow Shovel is one of our favourites of all time. With rear wheels, an insane throw speed and throw distance, a wide clearing path, and no battery life to worry about, you’ll be able to tackle every snowfall with ease.

How to Properly Choose Your Electric Snow Shovel

Price

Some electric snow shovels cost less than $100, while others can exceed $800. In general, a more expensive electric snow shovel will run on batteries instead of a power cord, will have a faster clearing speed, and will offer a wider clearing width and depth.

Clearance Path

The clearance path of an electric snow shovel can range between 10 inches and 22 inches. A wider clearance path will result in a more efficient shovelling process (less back and forth), but it also makes the machine less maneuverable in smaller spaces, and it’ll also be heavier.

Clearing Speed

The clearing speed of an electric snow shovel is measured in lbs/min and typically falls between 200 and 500. A faster clearing speed lets you get the job done faster, but it’s also usually tied to a higher price tag.

Throw Distance

The throw distance of an electric snow shovel typically falls between 20 feet and 30 feet. If you’re clearing a wide driveway, a longer throw distance will be helpful, but most people will do just fine with 20 or 25 feet.

Power Type

Electric snow shovels can run on a battery or a power cord. Battery-powered machines will be more expensive but also more maneuverable, whereas corded models will have the benefits of an unlimited runtime and a lower cost but the hassle of managing an extension cord in the snow. The best fit will depend on your personal preferences.
