SUMA convention kicks off in Saskatoon

Delegates take in the first day of SUMA's annual conference on Feb. 5, 2017.

The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association’s (SUMA) annual convention kicked off Sunday at TCU Place in Saskatoon.

The convention will see more than 1,000 delegates from villages, towns and cities from across the province. Some hot topics at this year’s convention include revenue sharing with the provincial government and infrastructure.

On Monday, the association will also elect a new president. Saskatoon city councilor Darren Hill and former interim University of Saskatchewan president Gordon Barnhart are in the running for the position.

“It’s very rewarding that we see people from local government step up to run for president,” interim SUMA president Randy Goulden said. “We know that they’re very busy in their own municipalities, so for them to take on the additional work is always really good to see.”

The convention runs until Wednesday.
