The Saskatoon Police Service has suspended a sergeant with pay, following an initial investigation by its professional standards division.

In a statement to CTV News, a police spokesperson said a sergeant was served a notice of suspension on Feb. 7 while an investigation is conducted by the provincial civilian police oversight body.

“In accordance with policy, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has accepted carriage of certain aspects of the investigation,” police said on Thursday.

“As the matter is actively being investigated, and is non-public-facing, we are not able to provide any further details at this time.”

A spokesperson for the police watchdog told CTV News in an email that it was called to investigate “non-public-facing conduct by a member of SPS” on Jan. 30.

Saskatoon police told CTV News on Thursday there are three SIRT investigations currently underway into the conduct of its members.

“In January, 2025, a member of the SPS was suspended as part of an unrelated, fourth investigation. While this case does not meet the SIRT mandate, the RPS [Regina Police Service] has been asked to take carriage of one aspect.”

According to SIRT, its mandate is to independently investigate incidents where someone dies or is injured while in police custody, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police officers.
