Friends and family of Saskatoon’s first murder victim of 2025 held a vigil Tuesday night to honour their loved one and to call for justice in his death.

Standing in the spot where Alfred Okyere was killed on January 20, a large crowd held up candles and chanted “Justice for Alfred.”

Alfred Okyere Friends and family of Alfred Okyere held a vigil Tuesday night in Sasaktoon.

The 23-year-old came to Saskatoon from Ghana four months ago to study computer science at the University of Saskatchewan.

Augustine Farley says his brother-in-law was four days into his part-time job at DSI Underground Canada - a mining supply company on Miller Avenue - when he was stabbed to death at his workplace. Farley says Okyere’s co-workers have described his last moments.

“His last words were ‘help, help!’ He shouted. He screamed. And tonight, this is our words as well to the justice system, we say help, help us,” Farley told reporters at the vigil.

Troy LeClair, 53, has been charged with first-degree murder in Okyere’s death. LeClair appeared by phone in Saskatoon Provincial Court before judge Lua Gibb on Wednesday morning. His matters have been adjourned until Monday, while he switches from legal aid to a private lawyer. He remains in custody.

Okyere’s friend Victor Yeke says prolonging the court process only adds to the pain.

“We cannot close a chapter until everything is done, so it’s not a good sign for us,” Yeke said.

Okyere’s loved ones say they’ll continue to advocate for answers and for justice. They remember the 23-year-old as a friendly, kind, and loving man.
