Heavy black smoke and flames were seen coming from the roof of a strip mall on the 900 block of Northumberland Ave. Tuesday morning.
The Saskatoon Fire Department arrived just after 7 a.m. Firefighters contained the blaze within a half hour.
A news release reported crews used power saws to access the attic space where they had found the fire had spread to one of the strip mall tenant’s bays.
The fire, which was accidental, was caused by hot works material on the roof. The roof was being replaced and hot material caused the fire to start.
Damage is estimated at $170,000.
