OC Transpo will be offering free rides on buses and the O-Train during the first weekend of May.

Transit Services general manager Renée Amilcar announced Thursday that OC Transpo will host no charge transit the weekend of Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4.

“To thank customers and encourage residents to try the new system and explore the city, OC Transpo is offering a weekend of no-charge service on buses, O-Train Lines 1, 2 and 4, and Para Transpo on May 3 and 4,” Amilcar said in a memo to council.

Amilcar says staff will host a free, interactive event at Hurdman Station on May 3 to “engage with customers” about new services, customer experience improvements and safety initiatives.

Free transit will be offered just days after OC Transpo launches its “New Ways to Bus” campaign, with changes to over 100 routes across the city. OC Transpo has said the new bus network will “focus on frequency, local service in your neighbourhood, and connections to key destinations.”

Customers will also be able to try the new O-Train Line 2 and Line 4, the north-south line that launched in January that runs between Bayview Station and Riverside South with a spur to the Ottawa International Airport.

There is no word on how much the free transit weekend will cost.
