New ‘Vendor Village’ hopes to bring fresh spark and foot traffic to ByWard Market

A new vendor village in the ByWard Market aims to boost economic activity in the historic neighbourhood. CTV’s Josh Marano reports.

The ByWard Market is getting a colourful new addition this spring as the city launches the “Vendor Village” on George Street, aimed at bringing more people and energy back into the downtown core.

Part of Ottawa 200^th anniversary celebrations, the project transforms a traditionally quieter stretch into a hub for local entrepreneurs, with bright pop-up vendor bins selling everything from artisan crafts and giftware to fashion and food.

For Darwin Radke, owner of Ottawa by Design, the launch of the village also marks the beginning of a new chapter for his business.

“We’ve been DaBaby Canada for 22 years, and with the Vendor Village being new and everything, we decided to change our name to better reflect the entire product line we do,” Radke said.

While still selling the baby onesies the business became known for, Radke has expanded into Ottawa-themed streetwear and apparel, making the new market village a fitting place for the rebrand.

Radke is one of a dozen local entrepreneurs setting up shop in the colourful new space.

“We all want to have people come down and see us, this is a totally new location,” Radke said. “There may be some slight trepidation but, I mean, it looks so beautiful.”

The once vacant section of George Street is now lined with vendors and shoppers, bringing what some say is a much-needed spark back to the market.

“I like the glow up. It’s vibrant and you’ll see the diversity and the entrepreneurs that are here and the work that’s being shared,” said Kafui Salakor, owner of Daka Trends.

According to the city, the goal of the Vendor Village is to increase foot traffic deeper into the market, while helping create spillover business for nearby restaurants and brick-and-mortar shops.

“The market’s had its challenges over the last few years going back to the pandemic,” said Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe.

“But last year, we saw a 50 per cent increase in visitor traffic. People are investing in the ByWard Market, they’re opening up new restaurants and hotels and other businesses.”

The Vendor Village is expected to operate weekly from Wednesday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. until October.

The official grand opening is set for May 20. The village will also be open on Victoria Day.
