Man injured during OPP operation in Stone Mills Township, SIU investigating

Published:

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man was seriously injured Friday afternoon during an operation by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the Camden East area of Stone Mills Township, about 170 kilometres southwest of Ottawa.

The OPP said in a news release Saturday officers received a call shortly after 5 p.m., reporting a disturbance happening at a home on Lennox and Addington County Road 4.

When police arrived at the scene, they attempted to communicate with the man inside the home.

The SIU said in a release the man exited the residence, at some point, with an edged weapon.

“An interaction ensued and two officers deployed Anti-Riot Weapon ENfields (ARWEN). Another officer discharged a firearm and the man was struck,” the SIU added.

The 41-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said in the release.

The OPP notes that it will not provide further details about the incident, as the investigation is in the hands of the SIU.

Anyone with information, or who might have video footage of the incident is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
