An 80-year-old man died when his Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) broke through the ice and sank in Round Lake in the Upper Ottawa Valley.

Ontario Provincial Police say officers received a call at approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday, reporting the man was overdue after going out on his UTV in the morning.

A search conducted by OPP officers and Renfrew County Paramedics found UTV tracks leading to an opening in the ice in Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards Township.

Police say officers with the OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit recovered the body from Round Lake at approximately 6 p.m. Monday.

The OPP and the Office of the Chief Coroner continue to investigate.

“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death, which is believed to be drowning,” the OPP said. “Foul play is not suspected.”
