Man charged with second-degree murder in weekend homicide in Ottawa

A 25-year-old man is facing a charge of second-degree murder, and a warrant has been issued for a second suspect, in connection with a weekend homicide in Ottawa’s east end.

Emergency crews responded to a call for a disturbance in the 500 block of St. Laurent Boulevard, between Brittany Drive and Montreal Road, at 9:25 p.m. Saturday.

A man was found at the scene with serious injuries and died from his injuries in hospital. The Ottawa Police Service identified the victim was Omar Jonathan Grant, 25, of Ottawa.

A second victim, a man in his 30s, was found at the scene with a head injury and was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to paramedics.

On Monday, police announced Jacob Blanchard, 25, is facing a charge of second-degree murder and assault with a weapon.

A warrant has also been issued for a second person, 25-year-old Samuel Laurin-Gauvreau of Ottawa, on charges of second-degree murder and assault with a weapon.

Investigators have said they do not believe “there is any risk to the public at large.”

Ottawa police issued a correction Tuesday to say Samuel Laurin-Gauvreau is 25 and not 19 as initially reported.
