Two dead, four injured in Highway 17 crash in West Nipissing

Two people were killed Thursday, one from the Sault, and the other from Wawa, in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 17.

Two northern Ontario seniors have died and four others were injured in a crash on Highway 17 in West Nipissing on Thursday morning, police say.

Emergency crews were called to the two-vehicle crash shortly after 11 a.m. Jan. 23, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Friday morning.

It happened about 11 kilometres east of Markstay-Warren, OPP Const. Rob Lewis told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

“A 69-year-old-person from Wawa was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said.

“Two other people were transported by Air ORNGE with serious life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, where a 74-year-old person from Sault Ste. Marie, later succumb to their injuries.”

Three people with minor injuries were treated at the scene.

No word on what caused the crash.

“The investigation is still ongoing with the assistance of the OPP collision reconstructionist and the traffic collision investigation team to determine the cause of the collision,” OPP said.

The highway was closed in both directions between Warren and Highway 575 in Verner, east of Sudbury, for more than eight hours.
