Police in Sault Ste. Marie charged an 18-year-old with impaired driving in connection with a crash Sunday morning that killed a victim on an E-bike.
Two people were riding the bike, both aged 15, when they were struck by a pickup truck on Goulais Avenue.
“Upon arrival, officers observed two victims receiving medical attention from EMS,” police said in a news release Tuesday.
“Both were transported to hospital. One victim, 15 years of age, succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased. The other victim, also 15 years of age, has serious injuries.”
Tried to turn left
The investigation revealed that the 18-year-old pickup driver was heading north on Goulais and hit the two victims – who were travelling south on Goulais -- when trying to turn left onto Third Line West.
“Upon speaking with accused, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol,” police said.
“The accused provided breath samples, which registered above the legal limit. They were arrested.”
Charges include impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, novice driver having any alcohol in their system, G1 licence holder driving at an unlawful hour, underage drinking and failing to surrender their driver’s licence.
The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
“The investigation is ongoing,” police said.
