North Bay woman sentenced in stabbing death A North Bay woman who pled guilty to manslaughter earlier this hear was sentenced this week to seven and a half years in prison.

A North Bay woman who pled guilty to manslaughter was sentenced this week for the fatal stabbing of Nicholas Nicholls in 2021.

Sandra Dorothy Haggart was 34 years old when she and her accused accomplice Travis Stillaway, 26, were charged with attempted murder Dec. 5, 2021.

Officers were called to an assault downtown on Wyld Street around 10:40 a.m. the day before, North Bay police said at the time.

One man was seriously injured in the knife attack by people he knew and was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Haggart and Stillaway were arrested at different homes in the 500 block of Rose Avenue the next evening.

When Nicholls died in hospital, charges were upgraded to second-degree murder.

Haggart pled guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter Sept. 9, the North Bay Courthouse confirmed to CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

She was sentenced Monday to 2,737.5 days in prison, amounting to 7.5 years.

"Manslaughter is considered a homicide that was committed without the intention to cause death, although there may have been an intention to cause bodily harm," Criminal Code Help said on its website.

"There would be no mandatory minimum sentence for manslaughter unless a firearm was used, in which case the minimum jail term is four years imprisonment."

Stillaway's charge is still winding its way through the court system and has not yet been proven.

His matter is scheduled to appear in assignment court Nov. 15.
