Hwy. 11 traffic violation leads to impaired driving-related charge for southern Ont. man

Efforts to reduce impaired driving in the northeast seem to be working in some communities – provincial police say stats are still high.

A 38-year-old man from Dunnville, Ont. is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop on Highway 11 earlier this month.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in Temagami at about 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 22, police said in a news release.

“While speaking with the driver, the officer administered mandatory alcohol screening,” OPP said.

As a result of the investigation, the southern Ontario man was charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand and speeding.

In addition to the charges, the accused also had their licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle involved was impounded by police for seven days at the owner’s expense. He is scheduled to appear in court in Haileybury on Feb. 4 to answer the charges.

“Drivers are reminded that the mandatory alcohol screening law allows officers with an approved screening device to demand a roadside breath sample from any lawfully stopped driver without reasonable suspicion of impairment,” OPP said.
