Family announces death of longtime Sudbury politician Lionel Lalonde, 89

Lionel Lalonde, who was mayor of Rayside-Balfour, then a city councillor in Greater Sudbury after amalgamation in 2001, has died, his family said Monday.

Lionel Lalonde, who was mayor of Rayside-Balfour, then a city councillor in Greater Sudbury after amalgamation in 2001, has died, his family said Monday.

Lalonde, 89, passed away at McCulloch Hospice on March 23.

“He worked in several fields throughout his life, including electrician, teacher, school trustee, regional councillor and mayor of the Town of Rayside-Balfour for 12 years, as well as councillor for the greater City of Sudbury at the time of its creation,” his obituary said.

Mayor Paul Lefebvre said in a statement that Lalonde was a dedicated public servant.

“Lionel was a pillar of our community, a leader who cared deeply for the people he served, and a champion for progress in our region,” Lefebvre said.

“His legacy is one of commitment and service, always striving to make Rayside-Balfour and Greater Sudbury a better place for all. His contributions, particularly in shaping local governance and strengthening our community, will not be forgotten.”

“His impact will be felt for generations to come,” Lefebvre added.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Cooperative Funeral Home in Chelmsford on Thursday. A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame du Rosaire Parish in Blezard Valley.

The family said donations by cheque or online to the Maison McCulloch Hospice would be appreciated.
